The cool night wind brushed over Rhian’s face and limbs. She squinted against the fire’s light flickering in her eyes.

When had they released her from her furry cocoon? How long had she been unconscious? She glanced up at the night sky. The moon was overhead. It was the dead of night.

The sound of feet pounding wildly in rhythm to a beating drum cut through the fog in her mind.

Memory rushed in. She sprang up with a gasp at the stiffness of her limbs.

And then she gasped again at the strange and frightening sight before her. Creatures of the forest danced upright around the blazing fire. Deer, bear, wildcat, fox and wolf stood on their hind legs and circled the growing flames.

The wolf swiveled his head and stared at her. Rhian realized these were no animals. They were men wearing the pelts of the beasts over their heads and shoulders.

She looked across the fire and saw others watching the dancers. Others who wore the black hoods she’d come to fear.

What had happened came rushing back with a force that took her breath away.

Hawise had drugged her.

Why? Why would the woman who’d done nothing but help her since her arrival at Browan suddenly seek to bring her to danger’s door?

Rhian remembered naught of being taken from Gareth’s camp. Only hazy memories of waking long enough to have yet more of the sleeping draft being forced between her lips. How many hours or days of dreamless sleep had passed?

She rolled her shoulders, working the kinks from her neck and back. Rhian knew the time could not be measured in hours. Mere hours could not account for the pain shooting through her body.

However, the sharp burn in her muscles meant that for the moment, she was still alive. For that she was grateful.

Rhian lifted a trembling hand to her throat. These men wanted a pendant she no longer possessed. Would they spare her life in hopes she’d lead them to the amethyst dragon they so desired?

A hand touched her hair. Rhian jumped. She’d been so lost in thought that she’d failed to hear any approaching footsteps.

“Ah, Princess, the game is up.” He lifted her hair, slowly stroking the long braid.

Rhian’s heart slammed against the inside of her chest. The gathering fear threatened to burst through bone and flesh.

His deceptively gentle touch stilled. “You had the chance to decide your fate.” He tightened his grasp on her hair and tugged Rhian’s head back until the pain flared like fire on her scalp.

Between his hood and the darkness of the night, she could discern little more than his outline in the flickering firelight. Twin flames reflecting in the pupils of his eyes caused her heart to beat even faster, harder. The soullessness of Satan shimmered from his stare.

He leaned closer, whispering, “Now I will decide your fate.”

He slid his fingers along her exposed throat, up and back down the side of her neck, then beneath the edge of her gown and across her collarbone.

She cringed beneath his touch.
